City of Los Angeles

Los Angeles - On June 23, 2004 a 39-year-old man from Compton stole a car and tried to evade police in a high-speed, 21-mile car chase. At the end of the chase, Stanley Miller was kneed and then struck 11 times with a large metal flashlight by Officer John Hatfield. The whole thing was captured by a television news crew in a helicopter. The LAPD Board of Rights found Hatfield guilty of using unnecessary force and he was fired in August 2005. Miller filed a lawsuit against the city that has since reached a tentative $450,000 settlement. (Oct-07-06) [LOS ANGELES TIMES: UNNECESSARY FORCE]
