Marin County, CA

Marin County - Forty-seven-year old Cary Grime was put in a "hobble" or "hog-tie", a restraining device that shackles handcuffs to ankle restraints behind the back. Grime became unconscious while in the Marin County jail; he was eventually taken to the hospital where he died two days later. His family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the county and charged that his civil rights were violated and that the police lacked probable cause to arrest him. The lawsuit claimed Marin sheriffs used excessive force, improperly applied maximum physical restraints and failed to take Grime to a medical facility for clearance before placing him in a jail cell. Marin County has settled the wrongful death lawsuit by paying almost $1 million to Grime's family. (Sep-18-06) [E MEDIA WIRE: HOBBLE DEATH]
