Oklahoma City - The US Department of Justice filed charges against Seaboard Foods and PIC USA regarding animal waste violations. The complaints filed against the firms claimed they allowed lagoons containing pig manure and urine and other waste products to contaminate ground water at five Oklahoma farms. Seaboard was also accused of allowing the release of excess amounts of ammonia, considered a hazardous substance, from a central Oklahoma farm. The two pork companies have agreed to pay $445,000 in fines for violating federal environmental laws. (Sep-16-06) [KOTV NEWS: PORK WASTE]
