Mankato - On May 17, 2005 a team of Minnesota State University students traveled to Detroit for a college engineering competition. Fifteen students and one faculty member were traveling in two vans to compete in the national event. Scott Rector was driving the first van which crossed a median on Interstate 94 in Michigan and crashed head-on with two semis. Chad Wilson, Wesley Loutsch and Jamie Schlachter were killed in the crash; four other students were seriously injured. The families of the deceased and two of the injured students filed a lawsuit against. Minnesota State University and Great Lakes Reinsurance agreed to pay a total of $5.25 million.
