Gary - In 1981 Larry Mayes was convicted of rape. He spent 19 years in prison, but was released after DNA tests proved he did not commit the crime. Mayes sued the city of Hammond and a police detective, originally seeking $19 million. A jury awarded him a $9 million settlement. (Sep-10-06) [FORT WAYNE JOURNAL GAZETTE]
