Wal-Mart

In May 2000, 58-year-old Joyce Burnside jumped off her Murray riding lawnmower when it seemed to be toppling over. The mower tumbled 30 feet down a slope following Burnside. The lawnmower blade chopped off all but her thumb and forefinger, while cutting her elbow and crushing the bone. The blades of the mower should have stopped within five seconds after she jumped from the seat. Burnside went through 18 operations and several bouts of infection. She filed a personal injury lawsuit against Wal-Mart who continued to sell the defective product. Wal-Mart has agreed to award Burnside a $1.8 million settlement. (Aug-28-06) [STATE JOURNAL]
