U.S. Postal Service

Tony Welch worked at the main postal branch in Roanoke from 1996 until 2002. Welch, who is black, claimed he was harassed by five white, male co-workers who made racially derogatory comments toward him beginning in 1998. Welch claimed the harassment stressed him out so badly that he became physically ill. He was fired in October 2004 for being absent without leave. Welch filed a federal lawsuit claiming unlawful termination and discrimination. The U.S. Postal Service has agreed to pay Welch a $162,500 settlement. (Aug-29-06) [ROANOKE TIMES]
