Sisters of Charity of Nazareth

A lawsuit was filed against the order of nuns claiming plaintiffs were abused as children at orphanages and schools supervised by the nuns between the 1930s and 1970s. More than 20 plaintiffs accused Rev. Herman J. Lammers of abusing them; he was director of Catholic Charities from 1939 to 1976 and a live-in chaplain at St. Thomas St. Vincent Orphanage near Anchorage. Others accused several nuns and two laymen who were involved at the orphanage of abuse. The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth operated St. Thomas St. Vincent on behalf of Catholic charities. The order of Catholic nuns has agreed to pay a $1.5 million settlement. (Aug-25-06) [COURIER JOURNAL]
