Hyundai Advance and MSC Ilona

On December 7, 2004 the Hyundai Advance and the MSC Ilona were heading in opposite directions along the Pearl River Delta between Shenzhen and Shanghai. The two ships collided and the fuel storehouse of MSC Ilona leaked more than 1,200 tons of heavy oil into the river. The spill was 9 nautical miles long, 600 meters wide and seriously damaged the oceanic environment in the waters off Guangdong Province. The two ship owners have agreed to pay an $8.5 million settlement for clean up efforts. (Aug-17-06) [PEOPLE'S DAILY ONLINE]
