Wilson Borough Police Department

On August 23, 2003 Brian Johnson was allegedly attacked and beaten by part-time police officer Gurshinder Martharu at Wilson Borough police headquarters. Johnson went to police headquarters with his sister to pick up his girlfriend, Kendyll Mimlitch, who had gone to the station to give a statement about an assault that occurred earlier in the day. As they were leaving the station, officer Martharu prevented Mimlitch from leaving because she was a minor and could only be released to her father. Johnson left the station to call the girl's father. As he walked across the parking lot he was allegedly struck in the back of the head by Martharu. He was then handcuffed, dragged across the parking lot and brought back inside the station. While Johnson was still handcuffed, Martharu allegedly punched Johnson several times in the face and kicked him repeatedly. Johnson filed a personal injury lawsuit against the police department along with officer Martharu. Johnson was awarded a $950,000 out-of-court settlement and officer Martharu has been barred from working for the police force. (Aug-10-06) [THE EXPRESS TIMES]
