Queensland Government, Australia

In September 1996, Sonja Hickson gave birth to daughter Jessica in a Queensland, Australia hospital. A lawsuit claimed that the Redcliffe Hospital in Brisbane failed in its duty of care in identifying that Ms Hickson's labor was "at risk" despite a number of warning signs. When Jessica's heart could no longer be detected and the umbilical cord was wrapped tightly around her neck, she was delivered and then resuscitated, which resulted in severe brain damage. Now nine years old, Jessica has cerebral palsy and spastic quadriplegia. The Queensland government admitted negligence and offered $5 million to Ms. Hickson. (Aug-02-06) [THE AUSTRALIAN]
