Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and Dr. George Melnyk

Three months after the birth of her daughter in 2001, Melanie Stokes was treated for depression by Dr. George Melnyk at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. Four days after being released from the hospital, Melanie jumped to her death from the 12th floor window of a hotel room. Her husband filed a wrongful death lawsuit alleging that Melanie had not been properly treated and that Melnyk failed to administer correct doses of medication or had not properly assessed the risks of suicide. A $900,000 settlement against the doctor and the hospital -- Melnyk pays $750,000 and the hospital pays $150,000 -- has been awarded Sam Stokes. Neither the doctor nor the hospital admits wrongdoing.
