New York City

Ousmane Zongo, 43, a West African immigrant, was shot and killed by NYPD officer Brian Conroy during a raid on a CD piracy ring at a Chelsea Mini-Storage in May, 2003. Zongo, who was unarmed, had been working on African art in another storage unit. Conroy was tried twice for the killing, producing a mistrial on manslaughter charges, a conviction for criminally negligent homicide, and a sentence of five years' probation and 500 hours of community service. He was also fired from the Police Department. Zongo's family accepted a $3 million wrongful death settlement from NYC. (Jul-21-06) [NEW YORK TIMES]
