Mathon Management

Two Mathon funds and more than 50 other entities managed by Slade and Williams allegedly operated a Ponzi (illegal pyramid) scheme and closed in 2005 after an investigation by the corporation commission's Securities Division, accusing Slade and Williams of repaying earlier investors from money raised from later investors who put their money in the Mathon funds. As well, the managers were accused of religious affinity fraud, soliciting investments from fellow members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The managers claimed that they used the investors' money to make high interest, short-term loans to borrowers who needed quick cash and denied any wrongdoing. (Jun-23-06) [EAST VALLEY TRIBUNE]
