Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc.

Gemstar's chief financial officer Elsie Ma Leung was fired in 2003 over a scheme to defraud investors. Leung filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against the TV Guide magazine publisher and interactive programming guide operator. Gemstar agreed to pay Leung an $8.4 million settlement. In exchange for the settlement, Leung has agreed to drop claims against Gemstar for reimbursement of legal fees, any claims against the company's and officers' insurers and any future claims for advancement of legal expenses or indemnification.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission had previously filed charges against Leung for allegedly inflating the company's licensing and advertising revenue by nearly $250 million over three years. Last February, Leung agreed to pay more than $1.3 million to settle civil charges for participating in the scheme. (Jun-13-06) [ WASHINGTON POST ]
