LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and RTG Furniture Corp.

Two EEOC suits charged the same Wal-Mart Supercenter in Bradenton with harassment. The first suit was filed on Aug. 12, 2004 and charged a department manager with harassment of two female associates. The manager later resigned.

The second suit was filed Feb. 17, 2005 and involved the store assistant manager at the same Bradenton store. He was charged with harassing a female associate he had hired a month prior. The retail giant had a harassment policy in place, but the staff in charge of implementing the policies failed to take action when they received complaints.

Two African-American female employees were subjected to harassment, including racial harassment, by their immediate supervisor at Rooms To Go clearance center in Seffner. The centre had written harassment policies in place and supervisors failed to act on policies when they received complaints from the women.

The suits against both companies were filed under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and resolved by consent decrees in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida in Tampa. Wal-Mart will pay $315,000 to settle two employment discrimination suits and Rooms To Go will pay $275,000 in its employment discrimination settlement. (Jun-02-06) [TAMPA BAY BUSINESS JOURNAL]
