Thrush Construction and Suburban Elevator

This is a settlement for the Workers Compensation lawsuit.

Electrician Michael Seay was working in the basement of a Madison Street condo building when he tripped over scrap cables left near an elevator shaft. He tumbled down the elevator shaft and was knocked unconscious. Seay slammed onto large elevator springs and cinder blocks below, leaving him with slight brain damage and spinal cord injuries that affected his autonomic nervous system. He can no longer control his heart rate, blood pressure or temperature and had to learn how to walk, write and balance again. Seay filed a workers compensation and personal injury lawsuit against his employer and the elevator company. Cook County Circuit Court found Thrush Construction and Suburban Elevator liable and the companies must pay Seay, his wife and their five children an $8 million settlement.
