On May 28, 2001, Margaret Petraski and Delia Grimmett were struck by Officer Debra Thedos, who was responding to a call. Petraski was turning left with a green arrow. Thedos was driving in excess of 70 m.p.h. and turned on her lights and siren only moments before the crash. Petraski was left a quadriplegic; Grimmett was killed in the accident. Grimmett's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the county and was awarded a $5.75 million settlement. (May-19-06) [ CHICAGO TRIBUNE ]
