J.L. Foods and Wampler Foods

Shakandra Hampton ate deli turkey during her pregnancy several times a week. She became ill and went into labor about a month early, during the height of a listeria outbreak. Her son was born deaf in one ear and also has developmental delays. Hampton filed a lawsuit against the two poultry companies claiming the listeria bacteria lead to the premature birth of her son. J.L. Foods agreed to pay a $1.75 million settlement while Pilgrim's Pride subsidiary Wampler Foods will pay $1.25 million. (May-12-06) [Z WIRE]
