David Scott Shimp drank excessively for hours at the Graduate Food and Pub before hopping into his car to drive home. Sally McKenzie Clark, her cousin Anna Grace Jordan and their friend Suzanne Paige Kessler were also driving that evening. Shimp crashed into the girls' car; Clark and Jordan were killed while Suzanne survived the wreck. Their families filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the pub for intoxicating a patron and letting him drive. The Mecklenburg County Civil Court has awarded the families an $850,000 settlement. Shimp pleaded guilty to second degree murder and was sentenced to a minimum of 13 years in prison. (Mar-13-06) [CHARLOTTE OBSERVER]
