Pima County and the town of Marana

In 2004, Codi Lee Colvin and Gabriella Bernice Grijalva skipped school one day and decided to take a drive. Grijalva did not have her driver's license and was spotted speeding by a deputy on I-10 frontage road. Pima County sheriff's deputies and Marana police began a 30-mile high speed chase topping 100 miles an hour. Grijalva lost control of the vehicle and crashed the car. She was killed in the accident and 16-year-old Colvin suffered head injuries and a broken back. Colvin's family filed a personal injury lawsuit for allegedly violating a law that only allows police to pursue violent felons. Pima County has agreed to pay a $258,000 settlement while Marana will contribute $33,000. (Mar-08-06) [ARIZONA DAILY STAR]
