The Union Bar

In 2003, Michael Kearney was a 23 year old senior from Marion who was studying engineering. On New Year's Eve Daniel Corbett was served alcohol from Vito's Bar and the Union Bar. After leaving the bars, Corbett allegedly attacked Kearney and smashed his head into a concrete wall. Kearney died of a blood clot in his brain resulting from a fractured skull. Corbett claimed self-defense, but police said the attack was unprovoked and that the two men had not previously met. Corbett pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years. Michael's dad, Paul Kearney filed a $1.3 million wrongful death lawsuit against the two bars and has settled with The Union Bar for an undisclosed amount. (Mar-04-06) [WQUD]
