State of Hawaii

On Labor Day 1997 an ice-addicted mother repeatedly shook and beat her four year old son Reubyne Buentipo Jr. The little boy was left clinically blind and comatose. Reubyne's father filed a lawsuit against the state claiming it was negligent in allowing the boy to be returned to his mother despite reports she was physically abusing him. Reubyne is now 12; he is confined to a bed in a nursing home where he is fed through tubes and is entirely dependent on others for his care. The state of Hawaii and AIG, the state's excess insurance carrier, have agreed to set up a $3.15 million trust to provide for Reubyne's medical care. (Feb-13-06) [HONOLULU STAR BULLETIN]
