CSX Transportation

In 2001 a freight train with tankers carrying flammable and hazardous chemicals partially derailed in the Howard Street Tunnel creating an inferno that paralyzed downtown Baltimore for days. The city sued the freight rail company to recover part of the $12 million cleanup costs. The city claimed CSX failed to properly maintain its tracks, but CSX countered that the derailment was actually caused when a city water main in the tunnel broke. The National Transportation and Safety Board were unable to determine the cause of the accident. However, CSX Transportation has agreed to pay the city of Baltimore a $2 million settlement.
