NStar Gas Co. et al.

Early in the morning on July 24, 2002, Heath and Tara Carey along with their two daughters, 4-year-old Iris and 5-year-old Violet, were all sleeping in their second-floor apartment when there was a huge explosion. The girls were killed after being buried in the rubble following the explosion. Their parents survived and filed a wrongful death suit against NStar Gas, Inner-Tite Corp., and landlords Leonard and Anne-Marie Pearson. The case claimed NStar violated state and federal pipeline safety regulations. A high pressure pipeline allegedly rusted in the damp basement and caused a leak that lead to the gas explosion. NStar has agreed to pay $12.5 of the $17.2 million settlement; Inner-Tite, the manufacturer of the equipment that rusted, will pay $4.5 million and that the landlords will pay $175,000.
