LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION

ChoicePoint Inc.

A lawsuit was filed against the company for failing to adequately protect consumers' personal financial information. More than 163,000 personal records were compromised when ChoicePoint illegally gave credit histories to unauthorized people and failed to have a reasonable procedure to verify the identities of those who requested the information. The company has agreed to pay a $10 million civil penalty, provide $5 million to compensate consumers, and take steps to better safeguard personal information so it is used only for legitimate purposes.
