Marion County

On May 4, 2001 Indianapolis stockbroker John Leaf had a little bit too much to drink to drive himself home. He left his keys with a friend and took a cab home, only to realize his apartment keys were on the same chain. Leaf broke a window into his first floor apartment, got in and went to bed. Deputy Ronald Shelnutt and a special deputy received word of the break-in. They arrived at Leaf's apartment, called out his name, entered, announced themselves again and found Leaf sleeping in bed. Shelnutt pointed a flashlight at Leaf in his dark bedroom. Deputies claim Leaf grabbed a hunting knife he kept by the bed and lunged at Shelnutt. The deputy shot Leaf three times to his death. Leaf's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the county and was awarded a $950,000 settlement. (Jan-19-06) [INDY STAR]
