City of Chicopee

In 1987, Eduardo Velazquez was convicted of raping an Elms College student at knifepoint. He was imprisoned for 14 years. In 2001, DNA tests ruled him out as the assailant. Velazquez filed a lawsuit against the city and several police officers claiming police prompted the rape victim to mistakenly identify him and that they suppressed evidence that would have exonerated him. The Board of Aldermen has awarded Velazquez a $2.45 million wrongful imprisonment settlement. (Nov-16-05) [THE REPUBLICAN]
