A lawsuit was filed against the nation's largest disability insurer for allegedly misinterpreting job classifications, improperly overruling doctors' opinions, and knowingly using incorrect insurance definitions to avoid paying benefits. California subsidiaries of UnumProvident have agreed to settle with the California Department of Insurance after two years of discussion. In the settlement, UnumProvident will pay an $8 million fine and have agreed to modify insurance claim practices and policies to ensure consistency with California state laws.
