Edgewater Police Department

Verna Sue Perry and her boyfriend, William Beasley, were pulled over for running a stop sign on May 15, 2003. Beasley admitted to using cocaine within the previous two hours and was detained in the police car. The officer performed a routine criminal check and discovered Beasley and Perry had a restraining order prohibiting them from having contact. Soon after, an anonymous caller phoned 911 and reported Perry shoved something down her pants while police were working to control her boyfriend. A female officer searched Perry and found almost 4 grams of cocaine in her underwear. She was charged with drug possession, but it was later dismissed. Perry then filed a lawsuit against the department for allegedly performing an illegal strip search that turned up the two bags of crack cocaine. She was awarded a $100,000 settlement.
