The EPA and FBI investigated worker safety and environmental violations at the McWane Inc. division company from December 1997 to August 2000. A lawsuit was filed against Union Foundry for allegedly violating the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. On August 22, 2000, maintenance employee Reginald Elston became caught in the pulley of a conveyor belt and was killed.
