Southern Inn Motel

The Florida state Attorney General filed a civil rights lawsuit against the motel owner, Raj Patel, for allegedly segregating black customers into a different section of the inn and refusing to allow them to use the swimming pool. This was the first suit filed that claimed to violate the Dr. Marvin Davies Civil Rights Act. Patel has been prohibited from owning or operating a motel or any other form of public lodging anywhere in the United States; he has sold his business and agreed to a $40,000 federal fine.
