Utah State Tax Commission

Several Utah taxpayers suspected they had been overcharged for floor covering purchased on a "furnish and install" basis and filed a lawsuit. Under Utah law, the installation of floor covering is not subject to sales tax. However, many vendors assessed sales tax on both the materials and installation. The Utah State Tax Commission has agreed to refund $5.7 million to consumers who overpaid sales tax for purchases of floor covering. Over 120,000 taxpayers will be receiving refunds averaging $25. The largest refund will be approximately $26,000. (Jun-29-05) [YAHOO NEWS]
