Over the past 4 years, state officials tried to purchase 160 acres of swampland from Jesse James Hardy for a massive wetlands restoration project. Hardy refused all offers, so the state sued him into selling the land. Hardy accepted a $4.95 million settlement. Florida has launched an $8.4 billion environmental project to bring back the Everglades and revive the slow moving river of grass that previous development nearly destroyed.
