City of Oakland

Officers Ryan Gill and Richard Vass allegedly unlawfully entered the home of 20 year old Terrance Mearis in October of 2003. In a struggle, the officers say Mearis grabbed Gill's gun and Vass shot him for protection. Mearis died from the shooting and his family filed a civil rights lawsuit against the city. Oakland City Council awarded the family a $50,000 settlement but did not admit liability. (Apr-14-05) [KESQ NEWS]
