The energy giant has agreed to pay an $81 million pollution settlement. The South Coast Air Quality Management District in California filed a lawsuit against BP, claiming they illegally spewed toxic gases from their Carson refinery. $30 million will go towards medical problems of those who live near the plant, $25 million will be spent on penalties, $20 million is for new refinery improvements and the last $6 million will be spent on past emission fees.
