Settlement: University of Oregon

The lawsuit of a former employee of the University of Oregon who was allegedly discriminated against has led to the university's creation of the post of Vice Provost for Institutional Equality and Diversity. The University of Oregon chose not to renew the contract of Joe Wade, the director of the Office of Academic Advising and Student Services in 1999 after 27 years of working at the university. Mr. Wade filed the lawsuit, saying that the university's decision was racially motivated. Although the settlement was finalized the settlement also forced the University of Oregon to pay $10,000 to Wade's lawyer, $98,500 to his pension and an additional $114, 537 per year from 1997 to 2001. The university insists that, despite the requirements of the settlement, the diversity post was created on their on initiative. They say that the post was created in response to past problems in regards to campus diversity, such as a protest in 1999 where 31 students were arrested while participating in a protest for increased campus diversity.
