AK Steel Co. AK Steel Co. has reached a $1.2 million settlement with the Environmental Protection Agency. AK Steel will pay a $300,000 penalty and has agreed to $900,000 worth of projects to reduce smog-producing ozone in Pennsylvania. The company also agreed to spend $66 million to design and install pollution control equipment at a plant north of Cincinnati.

The US government accused the company of improperly storing a type of chromium dust, which is known to cause cancer and failing to inspect hazardous waste tanks. AK Steel failed to prevent 145 leaks between 1998 and 2002. [SEATTLE PI]
