New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services.

$24.5 million dollars in extra funding will be spent by New Jersey state on its DYFS under the terms of a settlement agreement. The suit, filed in 1999 by Children's Rights Inc., alleged that the department violated the civil rights of children in foster care by leaving them at risk for abuse and neglect. The agency will also have to verify that all 12,300 children in foster homes and institutions are safe. (Sep-03-03) [CONTACT DYFS]
