Mental health drugs, Zyprexa and Seroquel, linked to numerous side effects including diabetes and hyperglycemia

Thousands of mental health consumers suffering from life-threatening drug side effects turn to for help.

Los Angeles, California - Seroquel and Zyprexa are prescribed to thousands of people suffering from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Consumers taking Seroquel and other drugs have hope for restitution after Zyprexa maker recently agreed to pay $690 million to cover consumer claims regarding diabetes.

Consumers who may qualify for inclusion in a related class action lawsuit may have taken one of the following antipsychotic drugs and diagnosed with diabetes or hyperglycemia prior to 2004. To learn more, go to: Zyprexa or Seroquel.

In 2004, the FDA asked all manufacturers of atypical antipsychotic drugs to revise their labels to include the risk of diabetes and hyperglycemia. These drugs include Zyprexa (olanzapine), Clozaril (clozapine), Risperdal (risperidone), Seroquel (quetiapine), Geodon (ziprasidone), and Abilify (aripiprazole).

In some cases, hyperglycemia and high blood sugar can lead to coma or death through dehydration, kidney failure, and cardiovascular disease. Diabetes mellitus can also lead to erectile dysfunction, blindness, gangrene and limb amputation.

Consumers and consumer advocacy groups have also been complaining about the risk of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS) and Tardive Dyskinesia (TD) when using these drugs. NMS has a high death rate and is a rare condition of high temperature, muscle stiffness and speech loss. The side effects of antipsychotic drugs vary greatly and the long term effects are still unknown.

Antipsychotic drugs and antidepressants bring in multiple billions of dollars each year. Zyprexa alone brings in over $4 billion for Eli Lilly each year. Consumers who rely on these drugs to treat mental illness hope for help from the medical industry and legal professionals. Find a lawyer at
