Life-saving medical device recalled by Medtronic, maker of internal and external cardiac defibrillators

Thousands of heartbeat regulating devices recalled due to battery short, thousands of patients affected and may qualify for compensation.

Los Angeles, California Jacoby & Meyers Law Offices PC, in association with www.lawyersandsettlements.com, relay details of the recent medical device recall and battery problems with Medtronic Inc.'s Cardiac Defibrillators.

Medtronic Inc. has issued an alert about its group of Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICD) and CRT-D devices with batteries manufactured prior to December 2003. These pacemaker-like devices may experience rapid battery depletion due to an internal battery short. These battery-dependent defibrillators, used by healthcare consumers who suffer from irregular heartbeat, are surgically implanted under the collarbone and emit an electrical shock to jolt the heart back into regular rhythm.

To date, approximately 87,000 devices have been affected and 13,000 people have already had the device surgically removed. In a similar battery defect, Medtronic recalled and replaced over 16,000 Implanted Defibrillators between 2001 and 2003. Medtronic, a key player in the worldwide medical technology race, develops products and services, which are distributed to 5 million patients annually. In 2004, the Minneapolis-based company earned $9 billion in net sales.

Medtronic plans to replace the $20,000 device and may pay for additional expenses. If you have had the device replaced or plan to have it replaced, whether or not you suffered battery malfunction or other complications, you may be entitled to compensation.
