Washington, DC: When Zimmer announced a voluntary recall of the Zimmer Persona Trabecular Metal Tibial Plate in February of last year (augmented by an official Class II recall by the US Food and Drug Administration the following month on March 12, 2015), the Zimmer Persona recall was yet another reminder of a medical device regulatory environment that is flawed at its best, and dangerous at its worst. And since the Natural-Knee Flex System, Prolong Articular Surface knee implants were recalled in 2009 and 2010, a number of people have filed Zimmer Natural lawsuits.

Warsaw, IN You want your Zimmer Natural Knee to perform like the one in the advertisement. You would expect nothing less, and little wonder given the widespread assumption that any product that carries the FDA stamp of approval (US Food and Drug Administration) will do what they say it will do, and over the 12 to 15 years it's supposed to last.

Marshall, TX A little more than a month before the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued its first of two Class II recalls involving certain components of the Zimmer Natural Knee, Zimmer was proudly promoting a webcast that would feature a Natural Knee surgical procedure. The webcast, scheduled for May 27th of that year, would feature Kenneth Gustke, MD—an orthopaedic surgeon with the Florida Orthopaedic Institute.

Warsaw, IN Even though the basic design of a product has been around for longer than 25 years, there is no guarantee of a problem-free experience for the patient. And while thousands of patients have experienced good results with the product—designed to more effectively mirror the natural movement and function of a human knee—it has not proven a worthwhile decision for everyone.
