Yasmin Side Effects Lawsuit in Canada Awaiting Certification Hearing

Ontario, CanadaA Canadian lawsuit against Bayer Inc. over Yasmin side effects is reportedly waiting on a certification hearing to determine whether claims against the drugmaker are legitimate enough to be given class-action status, the Queen's Journal reports.

"That's really the key issue, having a proper warning in place so people can make informed decisions about what's best for them," the lawyer told the news source. "Because if you know that the risks were high with one compared to another, and they're equally effective at preventing pregnancy, you're probably going to take the one with the lower risks."

The attorney added that a significant number of women had contacted him, claiming the birth control pill caused a range of side effects that included blood clots, gallbladder issues and strokes, according to the news source.

Bayer Inc. is a pharmaceutical company based in Leverkusen, Germany, according to the firm's Web site.
