The single engine Beechcraft Muskateer was en route from Mexico Sunday night when it went down in the water in Buck Bay, which is near Newport Beach.

The plane was reportedly registered to Chuck Chambers, a Palos Verdes Estates real estate agent. However, it is not known if he was on board when the plane crashed. Further, the names of the victims have not been released by the authorities.

Reports on the accident by ABC7News indicate that the pilot radioed for help to the tower at nearby John Wayne Airport, before crashing. "We tried to help them by finding them a place to land but by that time unfortunately we lost communication and the last call was they were actually in the water," Sgt. Steve Burdette of the Newport Beach Police Department told ABC7 news.

The crash is under investigation by the Federal Aviation Authority.
