Washington, DC It's been about 18 months now since the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) articulated its latest cautionary initiative regarding Orlistat, the weight-loss drug that is sourced by prescription but is also available in a different strength over the counter (OTC) as Alli. That's when the FDA approved new safety labeling for both Alli and its big brother Xenical that stemmed from a review of the drug in light of concern over severe liver injury.

After all, the risks associated with being overweight include diabetes, heart disease and other serious health problems. But for some people, the risk of side effects associated with Alli, known generically as orlistat, are simply too high. These orlistat side effects have resulted in at least one organization—Public Citizen—calling for a ban on the medication.
