New York Nursing Home Loses $19 Million Lawsuit Charging Elder Care Neglect

. By
New York, NYA Brooklyn nursing home will be forced to pay roughly $19 million in damages to the family of a former resident over charges of elder care neglect that left the 76-year-old man with more than 20 bedsores.

When John Danzy entered the Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home, the retired truck driver walked with the assistance of a cane and weighed around 237 pounds. By the time his daughter Margaret Whitehurst pulled him out of the facility nine months later, "he was 148 pounds and he had holes all over his legs," Whitehurst tells Fox News.

Six months after entering a second elder care facility, Danzy died of an infection caused by bedsores sustained from the previous nursing home.

Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home is accused of doctoring patient care documents to disguise its neglect. An FBI export testified in the case that the facility had falsified skin check documents by altering existing G (good) ratings to resemble B (broken) ratings.

Medical standards in the Empire State require bed-ridden patients be moved every two hours to prevent the occurrence of bedsores.
