Could Mirena Birth Control Side Effects Include Breast Cancer?

. By
Washington, DCIt’s possible that the active ingredient in Mirena IUD birth control, levonorgestrel, could trigger breast cancer. That’s the conclusion of a new Finnish study, just published, which found a 19 percent higher incidence rate of breast cancer in women using Mirena and other birth control products containing levonorgestrel, than women not using the devices. Various Mirena side effects have been noted previously, including Mirena uterine perforation.

But this is a new one, and will most certainly impact Mirena side effect lawsuits going forward.

Mirena is an intrauterine device (IUD) that is inserted by a doctor and provides contraception through a controlled release of levonorgestrel in order to prevent unwanted pregnancy. The device can last up to five years before it becomes discharged and requires replacement. Although much more expensive than conventional birth control, Mirena and other IUDs of its kind are favored by women who prefer the “set-it-and-forget-it” advantages a long-last IUD provides.

However, various side effects and adverse reactions - allegedly not included in Bayer Mirena warnings - are causing women to have second thoughts.

This latest news about the potential for breast cancer will only further the cautionary stance.

The study, published in the professional medical journal Obstetrics & Gynecology, followed 93,000 Finnish women over a 13-year period who used an IUD based on the levonorgestrel formulation. Study participants were between the ages of 30 and 49, and used a levonorgestrel IUD (Mirena) between 1994 and 2007.

Study authors noted that, statistically, they expected a normal incidence rate of 1,292 cases of breast cancer for women of that age in the general population. However, study authors noted that 1,542 of the study participants were diagnosed with breast cancer over the course of the study.

The study authors noted that research did not account for any pre-disposition and other risk factors that may have come into play, and therefore called upon the scientific and medical communities to conduct further research. Beyond the unknown risk factors that were not included in the findings, the study nonetheless raises a red flag of caution over a product that could become available to more women as the result of health care reforms.

An oft-cited adverse reaction in Mirena lawsuits remains Mirena uterine perforation and the migration of the IUD from the point of initial insertion. This can and has caused pain and suffering in scores of women who put their trust in the Mirena IUD for birth control and naturally assumed it would properly remain at the intended site. However, allegations of the device migrating - in some cases quite far from the original insertion point - put such an assumption in some doubt.

Many doctors maintain Mirena birth control is safe and effective. However, many women having suffered Mirena birth control side effects may respectfully disagree…

After having mirena for two five-year cycles I stopped using it after my divorce because I didn't need it. In 2012 I was diagnosed with LCIS. When I had cycle issues in 2014 I had it inserted again. I was told that it would in no way impact the LCIS.

I'm now reading that LCIS is most likely estrogen receptor-positive and the Mirena may, possibly, contribute to the increase of risk for cancer from the LCIS.

I'm now wondering if the Mirena could have caused the LCIS, and if it could be making it worse. I'm having it removed ASAP, but now what?

I started using Mirena in 2002 after I had my son. It was the form of birth control I continued to use up until last week. So I used the Mirena( remove and replace) for 14 years. December 29th 2016 I had an abnormal mammogram and ultrasound. January 5th 2017 had my biopsy, January 10th 2017 diagnosed with IDC and DCIS. My results were ER+ and PR+ . No family history of breast cancer and BRCA came back negative.
Surgery Feb. 3rd and finally because of insurance approvals and time had my IUD removed. Being that my cancer was hormone related I began to question if it was my IUD that caused it to grow. After reading about how many others have had the same diagnosis, it seems fair to say that it most likely caused or aided in the development of my breast cancer.

I have had the Mirena since 2009 shortly after a miscarriage at the age of 38 and in Nov 2016 at age 45 my mamorgram showed suspicious findings, had 2 biopsies and the results Breast Cancer in my left breast 7cm with 2 masses. I am also er+ pr+. My surgery is sometime next month to have a Mastectomy, my Genectics testing is Monday followed by surgeon consultation for reconstruction. My Mom passed away in June of 1999 from Ovarion Cancer however, no one else on her side of the family has history of Breast Cancer nor on my Dad's side of the family. My appt to have my Mirena removed is also on Monday per my Gyno it needs to come out ASAP. Doing research and found this I'm more upset because this could of been prevented by not having the Mirena.

I was given mirena coil in 2004 with hrt oestrogen patches had it removed in 2009. Diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer 2013 aged 46 had full mastectomy node clearance 6 chemo and 15 radiotherapy. Tumour was 15cm yes you have read it correctly oncologist seems to think it had been there for a number of years. I think anyone being prescribed this should automatically be given a mammogram first. I have spoke to lots of women with breast cancer and there is far too many who have had this Mirena coil for it yo be a coincidence.

I had my 1st Mirena put in December 2006. When the 5 years were up, I went in and had a 2nd put in. The doctor said I needed a mammogram although I had just had one the year before. He stated the guidelines changed but I believe he knew something was up already then. I have no family history of breat cancer. They found breast cancer and he insisted I have the Mirena removed immediately. I had a lumpectomy, 4 rounds of chemo and 34 rounds of radiation. I've had all genetic testing done. BRCA1, BRCA2 and BART all came back negative. Was told I do not carry the cancer gene and the cause was environmental. My grandmother lived to be 92, my mom is 77, I have 4 older sisters, 3 nieces and a daughter. None of them have had any signs of breast cancer. I know this is what caused it! I have suffered physically, emotionally and financially due to this product.

I had the Mirena put in back in 2006 and started having issues with my Mammograms and started seeing a specialist in 2008 with fibrocystic breast and large cysts. Then shortly after I started having issues with my Paps including several bad Paps over the next couple years. In 2010 they decided that the IUD implanted into my uterus and needed to be surgically removed. At the time of removal the doctor put another Mirena IUD in. I continued to have issues both with my breast and cervix, at which time I started seeing a hormone specialist, and she confirmed with testing that my estrogen was completely out of control. We couldn't figure out what was going on. In Feb of 2015 I had the Mirena IUD removed and in April had to make an emergency dr appointment to have cysts aspirated out of my breast. And then in August a hysterectomy was recommended because I couldn't get good Pap results. Then low and behold in Dec 2015 I was diagnosed with stage 2a invasive breast cancer. Since removing the Mirena IUD my estrogen level dropped, but I think it was wait to late. I am a healthy 45 year old that has never smoked, drank or did any type of drugs. I live a healthy lifestyle with eating right and exercising. No family history of breast cancer.

I had the mirena IUD put in Oct of 3020 I believe I had Fibroids I told my doctor to give me a hysterectomy. He said no your too young it causes problems. We can put a mirena in you it stay localize in your uterus. I said I don't use things with hormones he stated this is different it's barely had hormones. January 23 2015 at age 48 I was diagnosed with breast cancer mass grew overnight 5.8 centimeters. My tumors was estrogen positive progesterone positive her 2 negative and her 2 positive. My estrogen level was 100 plus 3. I had Genectic testing no genres for breast cancer or any of the other cancers. I believe the mirena sent my hormones out of control and caused this cancer I am the first of our family history to get breast cancer my grand mother great grandmother died in there 90s it was the mirena I know it.

At age 34 in 2013 I was diagnosed with stage 2 b agressive ductal carcinoma. I had the testing done and was negative. Breast Cancer does not run in my family. I have been thru a chemo, radiation eight surgeries and another one coming up. I believe that my breast cancer was due to the Mirena. I would love to be contacted if there is a lawsuit going on as my family has been thru a lot in the last two years.

I had the mirena inserted June 2011. Last April 2015 I had an ultrasound done that confirmed a mass. I was so worried. I called the doctor who had inserted the mirena at the time of the ultrasound results. She was in surgery that day. So she kept on relaying the messages to her office personnel. I wanted to get her thoughts about how the mirena could have triggered this mass. Till this day she never bothered to call me. I had the mirena removed April 13 2015 after my own research. May 26 2015, I saw the breast specialist Md, she noticed two mass in my right breast and biopsy the one that looks suspicious. May 29th 2015 breast Md called me with the result: mucinous carcinoma. June 4th 2015 the 2nd mass biopsy done and have the same cancer. The cancer is estrogen and progesterone receptor positive. BRCA test results came back today and is negative. No one in my family had or has any cancer. I need to have a mastectomy. I'm 36 years old with two sons ages 5 and 6. My grandmother will be 98 years old this August. Hypertension is my only family history. I am convinced that the mirena is the result of my breast cancer.

I had the Mirana placed in October of 2010. I was told it was safe and stayed in the uterus. I had it placed because I was told it was safe I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer January 2015. I have no family history in the first of generation. I had the Genetic testing completed and I was negative for the Brca gene. I was Dx with invasive ducal carcinoma estrogen and progesterone positive and her 2 negative my estrogen level was 100+3. Progesterone was 80. Unreal. I was told to take the Mirena out ASAP emergency removal. I'm stage 2-3. It's in my left breast and 3 lymphnodes. I am 49 but Dx at 48.

Five years ago I had the mirena IUD inserted for help with heavy periods. I now have stage 1 breast cancer and was told to get the IUD removed ASAP. When I asked my surgeon if there was a possible connection she said "probably not". I recently had a lumpectomy as it appears the cancer did not spread. I too am convinced the IUD was the trigger for my cancer. I am declining any further treatment other than the surgery. I strongly feel that since the IUD was my only risk factor, I will be fine from here on in. If no one else has our best interests in mind, it is up to us to spread the word.

My daughter who just past away April 18 ,2015 was diagnose in 2011 with stage 2 breast cancer who also had the Mirena to help with her heavy periods. She had the mirena at least for about 3 to 4 years. The tumor in her breast got really big and had to take out the mirena ASP. She had a double Mastectomy and a lot of lymph nodes taken out and went thru her chemo and a year later said she was cancer free,,,Last November 2014 the cancer matatisized to her liver she was only 44 with 3 children. No family history of breast cancer,Braca test negative.I have been researching the Mirena for almost 3 yrs and i always told my daughter i felt that it caused her breast cancer. I don't know how much is reported to the FDA when someone gets breast cancer and has had the Mirena so they can look into this. I don't know how they can have this product on the market..... Its like when women going thru menopause the doctors believed in HRT well what did they find out about that....Causes breast cancer!!!! Our lives will never be the same... I firmly believe the Mirena cause my daughter's breast cancer.

My wife also diagnosed with Breast cancer after having the IUD for just over a year at age 31. It really wouldn't surprise me if this was the trigger agent. Just not sure who to follow up with in case the claim is valid. It came back 3 years later with vengeance that we're still fighting...5 years later.

I had the mirena for just under 3 years and found a lump in my right breast, the doctor had me get the mirena out asap. My tumor was er/pr + with no family history and negative genetic testing. There is no other explanation to me, the mirena caused it and required surgeries, chemo, and radiation.

I have long associated my breast cancer to the mirena IUD. Because there was no cancer on either side of my family I was puzzled to find that I had it and also at such a young age. I have 3 daughter and its so hard to try to raise them with no protection of effective birth control. I wish they I had done more research before receiving the mirena my life may have been different today.
