Abbott Park, IL Abbott Laboratories, which withdrew a diet drug from the market in October due to Meridia side effects, has announced the recall of approximately 359 million blood-sugar testing strips because they could give low readings that are inaccurate, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Washington, DC Following the announcement earlier this year that Meridia was being withdrawn from the market due to increased risk of Meridia side effects, some consumers might have turned to dietary supplements to help with their weight loss. The risk of Meridia heart attack and Meridia stroke may have led to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requesting the weight loss medication be pulled from the market, but that has not stopped dietary supplement manufacturers from using sibutramine, the active ingredient in Meridia, in their products.

Toronto, Canada A lawsuit concerning the risk of Meridia side effects, which reportedly include a risk of Meridia heart attack and Meridia stroke, has been filed in Canada. The lawsuit was filed following a Meridia recall, announced after a clinical trial showed an increase in the risk of heart attack or stroke in patients who use the weight-loss drug.

The October 25th edition of the venerable Globe and Mail, one of two newspapers published nationally in Canada, observed that Meridia sibutramine—a drug that allows a dieter to feel full and thus be less compelled to linger in the buffet line—was approved the same year that Redux, Ponderal and Pondimin were pulled off the market for health reasons.

In March of that year, PC officially petitioned the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ban the drug from pharmacy shelves.
