Dry Cough Highlighted As One of the Side Effects of Lisinopril

. By
Washington, DCAn interesting finding associated with the use of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors shows that the development of a dry cough could be one of the side effects of Lisinopril, according to Dynamic Chiropractic.

Lisinopril is a commonly prescribed ACE inhibitor and this type of medication is commonly used to decrease blood pressure by the renin-angiotensin-aldosteron system (RAAS).

According to the news source, these inhibitors block the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, which ultimately leads to the reduction of blood pressure. Lisinopril is the common choice for doctors, as it was the third most-prescribed drug in 2010, with more than 87 million prescriptions written.

This commonly prescribed medication carries a significant number of biochemical side effects that could also be augmented by its use in combination with an additional nutritional supplement, Dynamic Chiropractic reported.

The findings from the study of patients who use Lisinopril showed that many of these individuals who are commonly using the medication could develop a dry cough as one of the side effects for the prescription. The addition of an iron supplement to this regimen was found to exacerbate this condition, the news source reported.

Research also showed that the iron supplements and ACE inhibitors should be taken at different times during the day. This may limit the complications and side effects that can come from the combination of the two drugs, according to the news source.

Iron supplements may interfere with the medication's absorption into the system in individuals who are prescribed the drug.

According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, Lisinopril can also be prescribed to individuals who have recently suffered a heart attack, as it can help to decrease the presence of chemicals that can work to tighten blood vessels. This allows for blood to be pumped in a more efficient manner.

The news source reported that there are a number of other side effects besides the dry cough that can occur due to the use of Lisinopril. These can include dizziness, headaches, excessive tiredness, nausea, diarrhea, weakness, sneezing, runny nose, decrease in sexual ability and the potential for the development of a rash.

According to the news source, any combination of the side effects could be the result of a patient taking too much iron.

My husband developed a dry hacking cough two weeks ago. He was coughing so hard that his throat would close up, and he could not breath. His throat hurt, he was dizzy, and he suffered from fatigue. He had been to the doctor five times. I finally took him to the ER as nothing was making him feel better, and he was unable to work. The ER doctor looked at all of his labs, cat scans, and x-rays. He asked my husband if he was on Lisinopril, and my husband said yes. He said to discontinue the medication as this could be what is causing him to feel this way. He stopped taking it today. We are really hoping that this will help.

Was on Lisinopril for 5 years with no apparent side effects. 7 months ago started dry cough. Doctor said could be allergies, allergy season ended, but cough continued and worsened. Producing a large amount of phlegm and mucus plus stomach discomfort. Doctors suspected reflux, endoscopy was normal. Tested for celiac disease which was negative. Treated for reflux for 3 months (omeprazole) with no effect. Doctors finally pointed to Lisinopril. I have been off the drug for 3 weeks now. Cough is slightly better, stomach issues continue. How long do these symptoms last or do I have this forever.

My husband has been taking lisinopril for 15 years and just had a catastrophic reaction this week.

Initially, he though the symptoms were from a very bad sinus infection. Therefore he solicited the medical attention from an Ear, Nose, Throat (ENT) specialist. He continued to get worst and developed a very bad dry cough. He became extremely fatigue, equilibrium off, so the ENT increase the antibiotic, still treating him for sinus infection. My husband woke up Thursday morning with the right side of his face numb and twisted. Rushed him back to the ENT. The ENT first words to my husband were "do you take lisinopril. My husband said yes. They immediately gave him a shot and said all previous distressed were due to lisinopril. He almost died. Two days have passed and the coughing has stopped. His face still swollen and numb but improving. He is getting better slowly.

These people need to be held accountable for selling this drug to the publiv.

I started taking Lisinopril about 8 or 9 years ago, not long after I started a dry cough which brought on a asthma attach. I suffered with asthma this whole time not realizing it was from Lisinopril the whole time. I quit taking it about 3 months ago, have not had an asthma attack since. My kidneys are feeling better, I see better, I even have more energy. I believe that this drug should be taken off the market, it is way to dangerous. I know that I will question everything the doctor prescribes to me from now on.

Interestingly, I have been on 5 mg of Lisinopril for years, with many of the same symptoms as noted in anove comments. The cough, feeljng exhausted, dizziness, all have been a problem. However, after losing my job as a medical transcriptionist for an acute care hospital after 19 years employment, and after health benefits expired, I quit taking the medication other than occasionally taking my son-in-law's leftover rX intermittently but still having side-effect symptoms, now with exacerbating symtpoms of stress related to loss of employment and subsequent risk of losing my home.

I started taking Lisinopril December 2010, in a matter of days after taking it I began this constant dry cough. I keep going back and forth to the doctor and emergency room from December until May. The last visit was an ER visit, where I had coughed so much and so hard that I literally sprained a muscle in my back. I was told that if I continue to cough like I was that I could possibly crack my ribs. All from just coughing. After going over my medications and when I started, and when the coughing starred. He told me it was the lisinopril, and that I needed to stop taking it. After I stopped taking, I still had the cough for about another 8 or 9 months. I could not work because I literally was incapable of holding a conversation.

My husband passed away August 2014 from angioedema from lisinopril. The Dr was unable to insert a breathing tube in time and he suffered cardiac arrest, brain damaged and subsequently, death. Are there any lawsuits for angioedema resulting in death?

My Dr. put me on Lisinopril a week ago.

Since then I have had a mildly runny nose and sneeze 6-8 times per day.

Haven't had sex with my wife since I started the dosage, but will be very interested to see if ED becomes an issue since it never has been.

I'm wondering if these side effects are temporary until my body adjusts to it, or is this the new normal for me.

Lisinopril added to blood pressure medicine in 2012. Started uncontrolled coughing from Sep-Nov. went to emergency clinic when could not catch breath and put on nebulizer. Nurse Prac. thought I might have pr-asthmatic condition. At next regular Dr's visit talked to dr about the coughing and she said the Lisinopril might be cause. Changed medication and coughing stopped next day. Have not had problem since.

I started taking Lisinopril in February 2014. Less than six weeks later I couldn't eat, I lost 25 pounds in 4 weeks, couldn't stop coughing, felt tired all the time like I had the flu. Checked on side effects and saw I had everyone side effect there was so I stopped taking it. My Dr. sent me for MRIs Catscans on my throat and lungs but found nothing. Here it is November and I still cannot stop coughing. What can I do? Came across this online and here I am. Hoping for a miracle.

I took Lisinopril in 2004. It's now 2014, and my throat still feels like it is closing if a shirt collar presses on my throat. Lisinopril had me coughing a dry cough and feeling like I was going to suffocate. Now, 10 years later, I can still get the feeling I am going to suffocate. THIS DRUG SUCKS! Can Lisiopril give me my throat back? Can they take away the worry that I am going to wake-up suffocating to death? And no, I don't smoke AT ALL. NEVER DID. Must be hereditary, because my Mom was on Lisinopril at the same time, also with a hacking dry cough. I urged her to stop Lisinopril and her cough stopped. My long term damage seems to be more than hers. I've been checking the Web since 2004 for a Class Action suit, and only now see that suits are being discussed, as of about 2011. FINALLY!

My brother in law was just hospitalized due to swelling of the tongue and throat. Doctors say he is allergic to lisinopril. He has taken the drug for 10 years without a reaction. He takes 40ml a day. His father who is in a nursing home had the same thing this past spring. Couldn,t eat or swallow. He was taken off all medication and has done much better. He had also been on the drug for many years. I have been on lisinopril for 2 years at 5ml per day and only related by marriage. I have had a dry cough for the past 6 months with some sinus drainage and sneezing occasionally. I also feel very tired quite often. It seems odd all of these reactions have happened in the same time frame of this past year. My husband also takes 40ml lisinopril a day but has not had reaction so far.
