Hip and Knee Replacements Becoming More Common

. By
Cleveland, OHThe number of hip and knee replacements is rapidly increasing as the baby-boomer generation inches toward the age for retirement and the obesity rate continues to sit near 33 percent, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

span itemprop="image" itemscope itemtype="https://schema.org/ImageObject" style="display:block">According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, knee replacements, which are the most common form of joint replacement, are expected to increase by more than 600 percent by 2030.

In total, hip and knee replacement surgeries totaled more than one million in the US in 2008. Similarly, the rate of less common joint replacement surgeries such as those involving the shoulder and ankle is rising, thanks in large part to improvements in technology, according to Dr. Wael Barsoum of the Cleveland Clinic.

According to its Web site, the Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center that was founded by physicians in 1921.

Such knee and hip replacements are increasing even despite recent device recalls—including that of DePuy hip implants—which have resulted in a number of lawsuits across the US and Canada.

Prior to December 2014, I suffered from severe arthritis in my Right Knee and opted to have a total knee replacement. The replacement part was made by Dupey consisting of Titanium. After the surgery, I underwent Physical Therapy for approximately 6 weeks (Medicare Approved) and everything seemed like the operation was successful. Approximately two (2) weeks afterwards (February 2015) I began to suffer severe pain in the Right Knee. I saw my Orthopedic Surgeon and he kept telling me everything is okay.

In July of 2015, I went to get a second opinion and the new Orthopedic Surgeon said that "He respectfully disagrees." Turns out according to the x-ray showed that the exterior (outside portion of right knee gap between the two replacement parts is far greater than the interior (between the two legs). The new surgeon had prescribed a knee brace to try to stabilize the knee -- negative result.

I would recommend not to undergo knee replacement unless it is absolutely necessary.
